Ichthammol
Overview
Ichthammol mildly astringent, irritant and local antibacterial agent with moderate emollient and demulcent properties. Ichthammol belongs to a class of preparations contaninig as essential constituents salts or compounds of a mixture of acids designated by the group name sulfoichthyolic acid, formed by the sulfonation of oil obtained in the destructive distillation of certain bituminous shales. Sulfoichthyolic acid is characterized by a high sulfar content, the sulfur existing largely in the form of sulfonates, sulfones & sulftides.
