Herb's Description
Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.. A small to medium sized deciduous tree, up to 11 m in height and 1.5 m in girth. Bark deeply cleft into rectangular plates, and exuding a deep red sap when cut, blackish-brown sapwood is white but heartwood claret-purple with streaks of purplish-black or almost black. Leaves generally imparipinnate, leaflets '3 or 5. Flowers yellow, borne in simple or sparingly branched racemes. Pods .woolly, central hard and long portion containing the seeds.
