Cnicus benedictus. An annual herb, growing to about 2 feet tall.
Cnicus benedictus's Leaves. The lance shaped leaves have a spiny edges and may be either lobed or cleft (deeply cut.)
Cnicus benedictus's Stem. The brown stem is hairy, coarse, branched, and erect.
Cnicus benedictus's Flower. The plant produces numerous yellow flowers which appear from about May to August are borne at the ends of the branches, almost hidden by the upper leaves, and are about 1 1/2 inches long. Surrounding the flower heads are leathery scales, tipped with long, branching, yellowish-red spines.
