Herb's Description
Zingiber officinale Roscoe. The herb is upto 1.3 m high. Leaves sessile, linear-lanceolate, glabrous. Inflorescence on an erect peduncle upto 25 cm. Bracts green with a pale margin. The plant produces green-purple flowers that resemble orchids.
Zingiber officinale Roscoe's Rhizomes. The rhizome (root) is found underground and usually the most valued part of the plant. Rhizomes 2-4 inches long; tubers branched, knotty and somewhat compressed, on one side lobed and clavately branched without a wrinkled and corky epidermis, buff coloured and striate<52). Dried ginger is called Sonth. The root contains both volatile and nonvolatile compounds. The nonvolatile constituents, which include the gingerols and gingerol-like compounds, are thought to be responsible for ginger's flavor, aromatic properties, and any pharmacologic activity.
